Jug Handle Creek Farm and Nature Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) nature education center and overnight lodging facility that serves as a gateway to Jug Handle State Reserve and the world’s largest intact Pygmy Forest Ecological Staircase. Our 39 acres include a native plant nursery, community gardens, forests, meadows, and nature trails.

Lodging and use of our 1870s-era Victorian farmhouse, cabins, and campground support our education programs and restoration projects.

Our mission is to educate all age levels on the stewardship and sustainable use of coastal land and water resources on Mendocino California coast, and to provide affordable accommodations for nature lovers visiting this unique coastal area.

Our goals are to:

  • Serve as a visitor and information center for the Jug Handle Ecological Staircase.
  • Provide an educational facility for schools, conservation groups, environmental agencies, and nature lovers.
  • Work collaboratively with local agencies, schools, and community groups in spearheading environmental stewardship projects.
  • Serve as a model of sustainability.

As a nature center we provide a Science and Ecology Program for schools, an After School Nature Education Program and a summer Nature Day Camp for local kids. We are the home of the Stewardship & Greenhouse Project, working with schools on restoration/education projects and raising native plants for use by the State Parks Department and others. We also maintain a natural history library; a science equipment lending library for local school districts and literature and maps about the Jug Handle Ecological Staircase trail for visitors. For overnight accommodations we offer private rooms in the Farmhouse, Cabins or campsites to groups, families or individuals who share our interests in nature. The campground, some trails, and the farmhouse are wheelchair accessible. We are adjacent to the the thousand-acre Jug Handle State Reserve and we serve as a “gateway” to the Jug Handle Ecological Staircase, a unique formation of geological terraces stretching from the intertidal zone off the coast, through coastal prairie and redwood forests and terminating in pygmy pine forests at the topmost terrace.
