Jug Handle Nature Education

Led by naturalists, guided by nature ~
Unplug, explore, let nature lead the lesson

Invite your students to leave the classroom behind and step into a world where nature becomes their teacher. At Jug Handle, they’ll wander trails, explore the beach, and slow down to truly connect ~ with the environment and each other.

Whether you’re staying cozy in the Bunkhouse or camping beneath the stars, we have accommodations to suit the needs of your group. And with hiking trails and beaches at our doorstep, your group can truly take the time to slow down and take it all in. Ask about tailoring your visit to align with what students are learning in class.

Ecological Staircase & Pygmy Forest Hike

The Ecological Staircase, within walking distance of Jug Handle Creek Nature Center, is a series of ancient marine terraces that ascend from the coastal headlands, up through the redwood forest and into the rare pygmy forest.  Formed over hundreds of thousands of years, a series of elevated terraces that now rises inland like a 2.5-mile-long natural staircase. Each level represents a distinct moment in geologic time and supports its own soils, plant communities, and ecological conditions.

Tiptoe Through the Tide Pools

Offered during select ideal tidal times and when ocean conditions allow, this unique experience invites participants to gently explore a vibrant mosaic of marine life! Through careful observation of colorful algae and tide pool creatures, participants learn how adaptations support survival during low tide conditions while practicing stewardship as respectful visitors in a fragile habitat.

Marine Mammal Stewardship Hike

Along the rugged Mendocino coast in spring, participants step into the role of marine mammal stewards, watching gray whales migrate and harbor seals nurture their pups.  Through careful observation, comparison, and reflection, they explore the similarities and differences between marine and land mammals, investigate how these species adapt to shifting ocean conditions, and deepen their understanding of the interconnected systems that sustain life along the coast.

Plant and Tree Identification Hike

This on-site, interactive hike lets participants become plant and tree detectives, learning to identify species through leaf shape, needles, cones, and habitat cues.  Along the way, they practice careful observation and pattern recognition, developing skills they can apply to plants and trees in their own neighborhoods.

Birds of the North Coast

Looking for a meaningful outdoor science experience without added travel or complex logistics? This on-site bird adaptation lesson comes directly to your group, making it easy to schedule and seamlessly integrate into your stay.  Learn through interactive activities, a hands-on feeding game, and guided bird observation walk around our 33 acre Nature Center.
